adventrek

Launched in 2005, we challenge and experientially educate people about injustice and culture in order to inspire them to live with humility and holistically within community. We've started this process by planning international short-term journeys where we can serve, learn and be exposed to injustice, poverty, & other cultures.

Wake Up To Poverty, July 31st

Nobel Peace Prize nominee and 2007 Kenyan presidential candidate Wahu Kaara will speak on global poverty and social transformation on July 31, 2006 at 7:00 p.m. at 26W325 Torrey Pines Court in Winfield, IL.

Her talk is part of an evening called “Wake Up to Poverty” and will be followed by a concert from Psalters, an experimental folk rock group influenced by the music born out of generations of cultures that have struggled with oppression.

Kaara, the founding coordinator of the Kenya Debt Relief Network, is also the Ecumenical Coordinator for the Millennium Development Goals in Kenya at the All Africa Conference of Churches.

With Brazilian President Luis Inácio Lula da Silva, Kaara launched the Global Call to Action against Poverty in Brazil in 2005, which has grown into the world's largest anti-poverty movement.  Its organizations together represent more than 150 million people globally, with campaign actions in more than 80 countries.

“Wake Up to Poverty” is sponsored by Adventrek, a not-for-profit organization, created to foster individual and community transformation through social justice events and educational service trips.  Adventrek affirms, in the words of Wahu Kaara that, “It is obvious that we as a civilization are at a critical juncture that calls upon us to rethink our destiny. This is not a small task and will not be accomplished overnight. But its mere admission calls for us to dialogue.”  On July 31, 2006, all are invited to share in this ongoing dialogue and will be encouraged to wake up to poverty.

2006 India

India is a country filled with wealth, but also extreme poverty. The effects of globalization have catalyzed many industries, creating large pockets of wealth, and increasing job stability for some; yet, millions continue to live on less than one dollar a day. The streets of Calcutta are home to many of the latter. Education is the dream for many of these disenfranchised, but cultural and economic obstacles prevent many from achieving this dream. However, there are individuals who are determined to be agents of change and make it possible for these children to receive an education. Adventrek is proud to partner with an organization whose work specifically reaches out to the slum and street kids of India. By building free schools, medical centers, vocational training centers, and night shelters, these organizations are providing hope to India's youth.

On the 2006 India adventrek, we'll assist with the development work already going on - construction and painting projects, youth development programs, medical assistance, food and clothing distribution, and education. We'll also meet with innovative local leaders who are furthering India’s development goals. In addition, we'll have the opportunity to be submersed in a culture rich in tradition and history. On this adventrek, we'll travel to some amazing sites in India - including New Delhi and the Taj Mahal, one of the eight Wonders of the World.

"We must become the change we want to see in the world." -- Mahatma Gandhi

what's an adventrek?

A new kind of journey : ăd-vĕn'-trĕk

It's more than an overseas trip, it's a new kind of journey designed to give you the opportunity to experientially learn about and practically contribute towards advancing social justice. Through humanitarian aid work, cultural immersion and education, you'll experience the culture and excitement of each country we serve in and with whom we partner.

On an adventrek you will serve alongside existing community development organizations in a variety of social justice, humanitarian aid, economic development and education projects.

On an adventrek, you will learn about the unique challenges facing that country, not solely from an intellectual or statistical perspective, but also from many opportunities to discover the stories of local people. You'll enter into their existence in an attempt to understand them, not to change them, and you'll most likely walk away with a more profound awareness of yourself and your worldview.

On an adventrek, you will live in community with others who are different than you. You will be challenged and provoked to think, behave and believe differently about the world you live in.
Go on an adventrek!
